Incorporating the things we care about into strategic decision-making: insights from Mark Gough

October 17, 2024 | Auckland

In collaboration with the External Reporting Board, we held an in-person
only roundtable with Mark Gough, CEO of the Capitals Coalition. Fresh from his
engagements at the New York Climate Week and the Global Nature Positive Summit in
Sydney, Mark delved into the importance of integrating natural, social, and human
capitals into strategic decision-making processes.

Some key takeaways from the session included that ‘value’ is the relative importance
and worth of something, as opposed to its price in monetary terms, and the success of
organisations around the world is dependent on the value they receive from these
capitals. Mark also discussed the importance of using the capitals approach – and its
three levers – for organisations to understand how their success is directly or indirectly
underpinned by these capitals, empowering them to make decisions that offer the
greatest value across all capitals.

The Capitals Coalition currently has an open public consultation on the Governance for
Valuation, the details of which can be viewed here.
