MEDIA: The global momentum for sustainable finance

Sustainable finance is becoming more than just a buzz word; a new centre, Toitū Tahua, has been launched today to help give it more substance.

The Centre for Sustainable Finance’s co-chair Bridget Coates said sustainable finance was when financial decisions were made from an “inclusive and holistic perspective”. That meant considering environmental, social and governance factors, not just financial ones.

Coates said, in that sense, it fitted with the government’s legislation requiring financial institutions and other large corporates to report on their climate-related financial risks, but it went much broader than that.

And this is no fad.

She said around the world, there was massive movement by banks, insurers and investors in this direction.
